International Kids Concepts (IKC) has once again been featured in the leading healthcare magazine Bouwen aan de Zorg. This time with a project that demonstrates how play solutions contribute to a better care experience: Antonius Hospital in Sneek.
Within the hospital, IKC created three play areas, strategically distributed throughout the building and fully integrated into the healthcare environment. Not standalone play elements, but carefully designed solutions that align with routing, interior design, and the use of space.
More than just distraction
In healthcare, there is a growing focus on patient experience—especially in waiting areas and public spaces. This project shows that a play area plays a functional role within that context.
The play areas at Antonius Sneek:
- reduce stress in children
- create a sense of calm in the environment
- support a more efficient flow
- improve the experience for parents and healthcare professionals
From idea to an integral part of the interior
The initiative originated from Antonius itself, with the goal of adding value for families without compromising on calmness and clarity. In collaboration with IKC, this was translated into an integrated design, tailored to existing architectural and organisational frameworks.
Through close cooperation with the facility and hospitality departments, aspects such as sightlines, traffic flow, safety, and practical implementation were carefully considered. The result: three play areas that feel like a natural part of the space and visually align with the hospital’s interior and theme.
Three locations, one consistent experience
Each play area serves a specific purpose:
- distraction upon arrival
- relaxation near the coffee area
- calm within the paediatric outpatient clinic
By combining interactive games with a design that matches the hospital’s existing look and feel, the play areas form a cohesive whole within the environment.
Collaboration as a key success factor
The strength of this project lies not only in the final result, but in the process itself. From initial concept to realisation, there was close collaboration with a strong focus on detail and practical feasibility.
Our thanks go to Antonius Hospital Sneek, Jolanda Boersma, and Stichting Zorgsteun Sneek for their trust and the pleasant collaboration throughout the process.
