Following a major renovation of the popular Smáralind shopping centre in Iceland, the food court gained a new purpose: becoming a place where families feel truly welcome. Within a 21 m² space, IKC created a fully custom-designed play corner that blends seamlessly into the interior, enhances the visitor experience, and gives children their own place to play and explore.
Carefully Designed Play Concept
From the very first render, one goal was clear: to create a play environment that feels like a natural extension of the food court. For this project, oak wood was selected and carefully matched to a sample provided by the client. The result is a warm, natural play area that feels fully integrated into the surrounding interior.
As a playful centrepiece, a unique custom ice cream cart was created specifically for this location. The play corner also features a range of analogue play elements inspired by Icelandic nature and culture, creating a distinctive and recognisable play experience that reflects its surroundings.
Enhancing the Family Experience and Increasing Dwell Time
Today, shopping is about much more than making purchases. Visitors expect a complete experience where every family member feels welcome. By providing children with an engaging place to play, parents can relax and enjoy their time in the food court, while overall dwell time is increased.
As a result, the play corner not only contributes to a more enjoyable visitor experience but also supports the commercial goals of the shopping centre. A positive family experience encourages repeat visits and strengthens customer loyalty.
Designed for Every Child
Accessibility played an important role throughout the design process. The spacious layout includes ample room for wheelchair users, ensuring that children of all abilities can participate and enjoy the play experience.
From Visualisation to Reality
Perhaps the most remarkable aspect of this project is how closely the final installation reflects the original render. What began as a digital concept has become a welcoming and inspiring play environment that enriches the food court and brings joy to young visitors every day.
