At Centre Schalkwijk in Haarlem, they chose movement. Colour. Experience.
This covered centre was built in the 1970s and is currently undergoing major redevelopment. The ambition: to evolve with the times. With new residential towers, sports facilities and a stronger social function within the neighbourhood. No standstill, but transformation.
It was precisely during this process that an opportunity for placemaking arose: a temporary activation that brings life to the heart of the centre.
Together, we developed a bespoke play area that aligns with the centre’s green identity. It includes, among other elements:
a soft, safe EPDM floor with hopscotch design
the IKC Beetle
various play elements
a bead table in a natural green theme
a warm, homely atmosphere
The play area was deliberately designed as a safe and clearly defined space. With fencing, without elements that invite misuse, yet with subtle level differences and playful details that continue to surprise children.
